Project description
The ten bowling competitions for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games at Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre concluded successfully with the speed of the greens on the final day running at a very pleasing 13.4 metres.
Dave Gibson, Fairways Sportsgrounds’ contracts director, said: ‘We were genuinely delighted the greens ran fast and true throughout the ten practice days and competitions. We had a lot of lovely comments from the players and officials of the Commonwealth nations involved.’
Fairways Sportsgrounds’ original task included installing a drainage system and reconstructing the greens and ditches, watered with an automated irrigation system. A network of pathways was also created. The job was successfully handed over to Glasgow City Council in August 2011. Next followed a three year maintenance period with Fairways Sportsgrounds deploying a full time greenkeeper as part of the contract.
Specialist greenkeeper, Craig Collins was joined by a small support team of colleagues on site for the last month. Fortunately there were no disruptions to play in the nine days of competition which included two events for bowlers who were visually impaired or had a physical disability.
Tiered seating for 2500 spectators was brought in for the duration and with the back drop of the Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum and Glasgow University the whole venue looked both spectacular and atmospheric attracting a massive amount of media coverage.
‘While it meant some very early starts for the team we are very happy to have had this wonderful chance to play our part in the Games,’ continued Dave Gibson. ‘Every day we had to have the greens ready by 7.30 am and as luck would have it we had a mix of weather across the competition phase so no major difficulties or problems arose. With the greens prepared it meant that Craig Collin was released for media duties most days including live interviews on both BBC Radio Five Live Breakfast and on BBC TV Breakfast as well as international media.
‘Already quite a few clubs and National Bowling Associations have made enquiries to some of the construction techniques and the maintenance equipment we have used. We have been lucky to have been supplied with some of the best Ransomes Jacobsen and Wiedenmann equipment available by our sister company, Fairways GM who supply turf and groundcare equipment to professionals across Scotland.
‘Truly it has been a real memorable project and with the home nations securing a clutch of medals it all worked out as planned.’
